One thing I love about slot canyons is that the light is always changing, depending on the time of year and time of day you visit. And in photography, it really is all about the light! On this hike, we were mesmerized for hours by the undulating swirls and textures of the sandstone slot. When we rounded a bend a saw this one small beam of light entering the canyon, I hurried and setup my gear and captured Evelyn before the light disappeared. This is a single exposure image taken from a tripod. I used ISO 800 to get a short enough shutter speed to render Evelyn sharp.

This spot on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon was difficult to get out to, but the views were sure worth it as you could shoot in just about every direction! At sunset, several storms were moving through and it was tough to decide which one to concentrate on. This is a single shot image using my lightning trigger at 1/4sec shutter speed. The sound of the booming thunder all around me was an experience I won't soon forget. Within a few minutes of taking this shot, the rain began to fall in earnest. Even though I was completely soaked, I was grinning from ear to ear. What a magical evening. I'll have lots more to share from this night.

Grand Canyon Extension

We have been having a blast on our Storm Chasing Workshops, especially with all the active monsoon activity over the past few days! Here is a shot from our chase last night. As sunset approached, a large rainbow appeared. But right as we started to photograph it, the rain began to fall in earnest. We quickly drove further away to escape the rain and got there just in time to catch the last of the giant rainbow. The wind was blowing and raindrops were quickly collecting on my lens. I hooked up my lightning trigger and this shot was captured right in-between when I was blowing off my lens! About 2 mins later, we were all running for cover as the rain started to pour down. Dramatic lightning shows continued all around us for several more hours. What a fun night we had!! 2021 Storm Chasing Dates will be announced soon to our email subscribers.
