Itinerary

Jan 7-17, 2027

The exact itinerary will be kept flexible to account for the weather and current conditions in the park. We will optimize our time for the best possible photography.

  • Day 1: Arrive at Bozeman Airport (BZN) no later than 2PM where we pick up participants from the airport and transfer to our hotel in Gardiner. If time permits, we'll go out for an evening photo shoot and then hold an evening orientation session.  We'll go out for a nice dinner after that.
  • Days 2-3: We spend the next 2 days exploring the northern side of Yellowstone between Mammoth and Cooke City.  Depending on conditions, we'll be photographing a mix of landscapes and wildlife. We'll be out for long days and a sack lunch will be provided for all participants. We return to Gardiner for dinner.
  • Day 4:  We head out for our last sunrise shoot in this section of the park before returning for breakfast.  After packing up and checking out, we start our drive towards West Yellowstone, stopping along the way for lunch. Once we arrive in West, we'll hold a quick classroom session and then enjoy a group dinner at one of the nicer restaurants in town.
  • Days 5-7:  We have 3 days on board a private snowcoach that will take us deep into the interior of Yellowstone. You'll see myriad thermal features, beautiful rivers and waterfalls, and deep canyons. And did we mention the wildlife?  With only 6 participants, we'll be able to get in and out of the snowcoach quickly when wildlife sightings happen. These will be long days and boxed lunches will be provided.
  • Day 8: We get up early for a fun excursion on a vintage bombardier out to a massive semi-frozen waterfall.  We'll capture the waterfall in the soft morning light and then start our return journey through beautiful trees flocked in winter snow.  From there, we continue our journey to Jackson, WY where we'll check into our top-notch spa resort before heading out for our evening shoot.
  • Days 9-10:  We have two full days to explore Grand Teton National Park.  The locations we visit and the mix of landscape vs wildlife will depend on weather conditions.  The Tetons are often a great place to capture Moose, Big Horn Sheep, Elk, Red Fox, Swans, Bison and more.  And if the mountains are out, you'll get some spectacular landscape images!
  • Day 11:  It's our final sunrise shoot in the Tetons and we return to the hotel for breakfast.  After packing up, we transport everyone to the Jackson airport (JAC) and say our final good-byes.

What to Expect

We’ll be out early, chasing first light and staying in the field well past sunset to make the most of every opportunity. The only exception is in the Tetons, where a midday pause allows time to recharge and dive into classroom learning before heading back out for more adventure.

This workshop is intentionally designed for a small group with a 3:1 participant-to-instructor ratio. That means quick access to your gear, ample space for clothing and equipment, and the flexibility to move fast when wildlife opportunities arise. Unlike larger workshops where one instructor may oversee a dozen participants crammed into a single van, you’ll always have room, comfort, and the best vantage points.

In addition to field instruction, we’ll include image critique and post-processing sessions as time allows. A few months before the trip, we’ll host a group Zoom meeting and send detailed information on flights, gear, and clothing checklists. Your flights will be into either Jackson Hole (JAC) or Bozeman (BZN), depending on your workshop dates, and you’ll depart from the opposite airport.

January brings crisp, frosty mornings, snow-draped forests, frosty bison, and steaming geyser basins—conditions that make Yellowstone so magical in winter. While temperatures can be frigid, we’ll help ensure you have the right gear to stay warm and focus on your photography.  Temperatures can vary widely, getting as cold as -40°F or as warm as +40°F.  Dressing in layers is the key to success and comfort.

No long hikes are planned on this workshop, but there will be times when we have to walk short distances through the snow for better vantage points. The longest walk will be going out to the barns in the Tetons and snowshoes will be provided for the 2 mile round-trip walk.

Artist’s Statement

“I believe that the Earth shares secrets with us that only can be discovered by trying to understand our position on this planet. We are never fully intimate with the planet but are given brief moments that make our souls want more. These glimpses of nature’s power are fleeting and never the same twice. I also believe it is important to share with those who want it. The treasures that await us given the patience that is out there. What I try to do is bring some of that magic to my images to share with the rest of the world. Each of my images tells a story that everyone can relate to in some way whether it is success, fear, or challenging oneself to overcome obstacles

Josh Miller

Photography Instructor

Josh has been a professional photographer and educator for more than
twenty years. His work has been published by National Geographic, Sierra Club, Audubon, Microsoft, The Wall Street Journal, and Outside Magazine. Josh is also passionate about the environment and shares his photographs and knowledge with conservation projects whenever possible.

Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, Josh developed a passion for “the high country” and “bad” weather. He became interested in photography while working at Denali National Park for a summer job during college, and after graduation he moved to the mountains of northern California to spend as much time as possible climbing, skiing, and photographing in the Sierra. In addition to being a professional photographer, Josh is a California
credentialed art and science teacher. Josh and his wife spent seventeen years running an environmentally focused high school academy in Northern California where they were both honored as teachers of the year. Josh also loves to travel, and after the Covid pandemic, he and his wife spent nearly two years abroad traveling and photographing the world with their two young boys.

During workshops, Josh loves sharing his passions for the environment and travel, and his expertise as both an educator and photographer helps students improve their technical skills and feel comfortable pushing their creative boundaries.
