Itinerary

Due to the unpredictability of Patagonian weather, the itinerary below is subject to change. We will make every effort to optimize our daily shooting opportunities. A pre-workshop zoom meeting will be held with all participants 2-3 months before the trip.

  • Day 1 (Apr 11): You will fly into Puerto Natales, Chile.  Airport pickups will begin mid-afternoon and we'll drive to Cerro Castillo - our home base for the next 4 nights.  After settling into our hotel, we'll enjoy a delicious buffet dinner and talk in depth about the days ahead of us.
  • Days 2-5 (Apr 12-15):  It's 4 full days of puma tracking and photography! Each morning we'll wake up early and drive to the Laguna Amarga Estancia where we have special access on private land. The local guides coordinate with the puma trackers to determine our best locations. From there we’ll embark on foot and can walk several miles each day to find the best photo angles of the pumas. We will photograph the pumas and other wildlife both in the morning and the evening. On the evening of Apr 15th, we'll drive back to Puerto Natales and check into our hotel.
  • Days 6-8 (Apr 16-18):  After breakfast and a post-processing session, we load up and make our way to the impressive Torres del Paine National Park. The weather and conditions will dictate our exact itinerary and we'll make sure you get the best shots possible!  Some of the highlights include the Harbors of Lake Pehoe, with its wonderful stony bay foregrounds. Enjoy panoramic views from the Mirador Condor, Glacier Grey, Nordenskjold Lake, the Salto Grande Waterfall. We'll even organize a special photo shoot with the local guachos and their horses!
  • Day 9 (Apr 19):  We enjoy a final sunrise shoot in Chilean Patagonia before packing up and hitting the road towards Argentina.  We cross the border and get settled into our new accommodations in the picturesque village of El Chalten.
  • Day 10 (Apr 20):  We are up early for a sunrise shoot under the alpenglow of the Fitz Roy massif.  The deep red hues are nothing short of impressive. Then we'll spend several hours exploring the Lago Desierto region, with waterfalls galore!  We'll conclude the day with a final sunset shoot from an area with 360-degree views with the famed Mt Fitz Roy!
  • Day 11 (Apr 21): We go out for an early sunrise shoot followed by breakfast and then begin the 3hr drive towards El Calafate. With forests full of fall colors, we find many compositions to frame the Perito Moreno Glacier with it's vivid-blue ice reflecting the golden light of the sun.  We return to town for our final group dinner.
  • Day 12 (Apr 22):  Your Patagonian adventure concludes as you depart from El Calafate. A complimentary shuttle will transport you to the airport for your onward journey or flight home.
Patagonia Peaks and Pumas Photo Workshop

Physical Difficulty

This workshop is rated Moderate for physical activity. We aren't planning any long hikes, but due to the rough and uneven terrain you need to be in good health with an above average level of fitness and mobility. Make sure you are comfortable hiking 2-3 miles and 200-700 ft of elevation gain with your camera gear and tripod.

Please note that we cannot control where the pumas are and how much hiking may be required to find and follow them during the day. Most days it will be around 2-3 miles total.  But it is possible we could cover up to 3-5 miles while tracking the pumas.  This would increase the difficulty rating to Difficult on our scale on those day(s).

Logistics

You will fly into Puerto Natales, Chile (PNT) and fly out of El Calafate, Argentina (FTE). Please do NOT book your flights until we give the go-ahead to do so approximately 6 months before the departure date.  We will send you a detailed document to help you plan your international travel.

We will be staying at very nice hotels throughout the workshop. Each room will have private bathrooms. Double occupancy is assumed in the base price and single rooms are available for a surcharge (see Pricing section below).

The weather in Patagonia is highly unpredictable.  During the fall season we can have rain, snow, high winds, or beautiful sunny days. You need to be prepared for the worst weather.  Please see the gear list further down.

*Ryan McGinty will be instructing the pumas portion on Apr 11-16. Raymond Hoffman will be instructing the landscape portion on Apr 16-22. David Swindler is instructing the entire workshop dates.

Approx 2-3 months before the workshop, we'll hold a zoom meeting with all participants to help answer questions and talk in more detail about your camera gear, clothing needs, and the itinerary.
