Itinerary

Day 1 – July 12:
Arrive in Kalispell by early afternoon, where we’ll meet and transfer to our lodging near the park entrance. After settling in, we’ll kick off the workshop with a sunset shoot at a stunning alpine lake, capturing reflections and dramatic skies in the warm evening light.

Day 2 – July 13:
We're up early for a sunrise shoot, then return for breakfast. After packing up, we’ll journey along one of North America’s most scenic drives, stopping often to capture wildflowers, rushing creeks, forested cascades, wildlife, and towering peaks. In the evening, we’ll photograph sunset light dancing across a valley filled with wildflowers. Overnight near the east side of the park.

Day 3 – July 14:
An early morning hike takes us to a quiet alpine lake, where we’ll photograph dramatic peaks rising above still waters in soft morning light. Later, we’ll explore one of Glacier’s most photogenic valleys on foot, capturing wildflowers, wildlife, and glacial features along the way. After a midday break and instruction session, we’ll head out again for a golden hour shoot.

Day 4 – July 15:
We are out early for sunrise shoot, return for breakfast, then spend the day exploring the heart of the park. Expect cascading waterfalls, colorful creeks, and sweeping vistas that come alive in the changing light. In the evening, we’ll hike to a high-alpine overlook to photograph the landscape bathed in golden glow.

Day 5 – July 16:
Depending on conditions, we'll choose our sunrise location, followed by some downtime and photo instruction. Later, we’ll explore a quieter trail leading to a hidden waterfall, perfect for intimate landscape compositions. We’ll finish the day with a spectacular wildflower shoot in one of the park’s most open and panoramic settings.

Day 6 – July 17:
On our final morning, we’ll photograph Glacier's iconic island at sunrise, then descend to the shoreline to capture colorful rocks beneath the clear glacial waters. After breakfast, we’ll wrap up the workshop and transport everyone back to the Kalispell airport.

Logistics

Please arrive in Kalispell, MT before 2PM on Day 1 for pickup at the airport. Transportation is provided to/from the airport so there is no need to rent a car.  We will return to Kalispell by mid-afternoon on Day 6 and return travel can be scheduled for anytime after that.

Lodging is in short supply so five nights of hotels have been pre-paid for our group, with 1 night at Belton Chalet, 2 nights in St Mary's, and 2 nights at Rising Sun. During checkout you will add your lodging package based on either single or double occupancy.  See the Pricing section for more details.

Everyone on this trip should be in reasonably good physical condition.  In order to really see Glacier, you need to hike. The longest walk will be 7 miles round trip with 500 ft of elevation gain.  The other hikes will shorter, around 3 miles round trip with similar elevation gain. You should be comfortable walking these distances while carrying your photo gear, snacks, and water.

A couple months ahead of time we'll schedule a zoom meeting with all participants to help answer questions and ensure you are well prepared for the workshop.

We'll set aside time for post-processing and image critique throughout the workshop.  There is no need for you to bring a laptop unless you want to download and or edit your images.  All levels of photographers are welcome on this workshop and we'll tailor the instruction to the unique needs of the group.

The temperatures in July are pretty temperate.  But it can be quite cold in the morning especially at the higher elevations. Bring plenty of warm clothes.  Rain and thunderstorms are always a possibility, so come prepared with a rain jacket and a cover for your backpack. Finally, where there are wildflowers, there are usually mosquitos. Don't forget some bug spray!  See the gear list further down.

Artist’s Statement

“I believe that the Earth shares secrets with us that only can be discovered by trying to understand our position on this planet. We are never fully intimate with the planet but are given brief moments that make our souls want more. These glimpses of nature’s power are fleeting and never the same twice. I also believe it is important to share with those who want it. The treasures that await us given the patience that is out there. What I try to do is bring some of that magic to my images to share with the rest of the world. Each of my images tells a story that everyone can relate to in some way whether it is success, fear, or challenging oneself to overcome obstacles
