Why Go?
This workshop offers a rare look into Southwest China’s rich history, unique wildlife, and dramatic landscapes. We’ll visit ancient temples, terraced tea plantations, traditional villages, and futuristic cityscapes while experiencing a region shaped by more than 5,000 years of civilization.
This part of China is home to diverse minority cultures, including Tibetan, Qiang, Yi, Miao, and other communities whose traditional clothing, architecture, festivals, and daily life create wonderful opportunities for cultural and street photography.
The wildlife here is unforgettable. Giant pandas bring instant charm with their roly-poly bodies, expressive faces, and playful antics, while golden snub-nosed monkeys feel almost mythical with their golden coats, blue faces, and lively family interactions. In Chinese culture, golden monkeys are linked to the legendary Sun Wukong, the Monkey King from Journey to the West. First published in the 16th century, this beloved classic remains dear to generations of Chinese families.
The unexpected stars for many photographers will be the pheasants. Timed for peak breeding season, this expedition gives us opportunities to photograph some of Asia’s most spectacular birds in their richest colors and most active displays. Golden Pheasants glow with brilliant reds, golds, and fiery orange tones, while Lady Amherst’s Pheasants and Chinese Monals show an astonishing range of iridescent colors and intricate feather patterns. During the mating season, these birds posture, display, leap, chase, and even battle in dramatic acrobatic encounters.
This is also a trip of striking contrasts: ancient temples, traditional courtyard homes, mountain monasteries, and timeless village scenes set against soaring skyscrapers, elevated highways, modern tunnels, and bold urban design. It is this blend of old and new, wild and urban, cultural and natural, that makes Southwest China such a fascinating photography destination.

Itinerary: Feb 21-Mar 5
Both sets of dates are identical in the locations you'll visit. For this itinerary, you'll start in Chengdu and end in Chongqing.
Day 1: Arrive in Chengdu
Arrive in Chengdu, where our local team will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your 5-star accommodations. We’ll begin our cultural activities right away by visiting historic temples and traditional neighborhoods. In the evening, we’ll enjoy a special welcome dinner.
Day 2: Chengdu to Tangjiahe Nature Reserve
After breakfast, we’ll leave Chengdu and begin our journey into the mountains of Southwest China. We’ll enter Tangjiahe Nature Reserve for our first afternoon safari. Possible subjects include takin, Chinese goral, Reeves’s muntjac, Tibetan macaque, Asiatic black bear, yellow-throated marten, and other mountain wildlife. The day concludes with check-in at our lodge, where we’ll enjoy a peaceful evening surrounded by wildlife and nature.
Day 3: Tangjiahe and Golden Monkeys
We’ll spend the morning continuing our exploration of Tangjiahe before departing for one of the best areas for golden snub-nosed monkeys. In the afternoon, we’ll have our first dedicated photography session with these beautiful primates, known for their golden coats, striking blue faces, and expressive family behavior.
Day 4: Golden Snub-nosed Monkeys
We’ll return early for more time photographing golden snub-nosed monkeys in their native mountain habitat. After lunch, we’ll continue deeper into the region and settle into a traditional-style lodging experience, giving us a taste of local architecture and village atmosphere.
Day 5: Golden Monkeys and Red Pandas
This morning gives us another opportunity with golden snub-nosed monkeys at a different location with distinct habitat. If timing allows, we’ll visit a panda conservatory with opportunities for red pandas before enjoying an evening near one of the region’s scenic bridges and historic neighborhoods.
Day 6: Giant Pandas and Mountain Birds
We’ll depart early for a renowned reserve where we’ll photograph giant pandas in a beautiful mountain setting. After lunch, we’ll travel toward a remote mountain village in preparation for the iridescent Chinese Monal and other high altitude birds.
Day 7: Chinese Monal and Alpine Scenery
This morning we’ll focus on photographing the Chinese Monal and other high-elevation species. Perfectly timed for the breeding season, we may see males display their dazzling rainbow plumage against stunning alpine backdrops. Afterward, we’ll continue through scenic mountain landscapes toward our next base for bird photography, enjoying sweeping views of the rugged terrain along the way.
Day 8: Pheasant Bird Hides
Today is dedicated to bird photography from private mountain hides. Our target species include Lady Amherst’s Pheasant, White-eared Pheasant, Koklass Pheasant, Blood Pheasant, and more. Each species brings something unique: the ornate cape, metallic blue-green body, crimson crest, barred tail, and intricate patterning of Lady Amherst’s Pheasant; the elegant pale plumage and social behavior of White-eared Pheasants; the understated beauty and elusive nature of Koklass Pheasants; and the crimson highlights and alpine adaptations of Blood Pheasants. These sessions give us our best chance to witness courtship displays, territorial behavior, and dramatic interactions rarely seen by most birders and photographers.
Day 9: Mandarin Ducks and Tea Plantations
We’ll begin the day with opportunities to photograph Mandarin Ducks, a classic Chinese symbol of love and loyalty. The male’s ornate plumage, with brilliant orange sails, intricate patterns, and vibrant colors, makes it one of the world’s most beautiful waterfowl. Afterward, we’ll continue to the tea country of Sichuan. In the afternoon, we’ll photograph terraced tea plantations and experience a region where tea was first cultivated over 2,000 years ago. Tea culture has shaped daily life here for millennia, and the rolling green landscapes provide exceptional photographic opportunities.
Day 10: Tea Landscapes and Scenic Transfer
We’ll start with an early morning photography session in the tea plantations, when soft light and mist can create beautiful landscape opportunities for both traditional and aerial photography. Afterward, we’ll continue across Southwest China, with possible cultural and scenic stops depending on timing, before arriving near our next spot for bird photography.
Day 11: Tragopans, Pheasants, and Chongqing
We’ll begin with an early morning bird hide session targeting spectacular species such as Temminck’s Tragopan, Silver Pheasant, and other forest birds. Temminck’s Tragopan is often considered one of Asia’s most beautiful pheasants, with males displaying brilliant scarlet plumage covered in white spots and an inflatable blue facial wattle used during courtship displays. Silver Pheasants provide a striking contrast with their elegant silver-white upperparts, glossy black underparts, and dramatic crest.
In the afternoon, we’ll transfer to Chongqing. After check-in at our 5-star accommodations, we’ll photograph the city’s famous illuminated skyline, bridges, rivers, and futuristic urban architecture.
Day 12: Final Bird Hide and Optional Langurs
Our final full day includes another dedicated bird hide session with opportunities for the spectacular Golden Pheasant. Widely regarded as one of the most colorful birds in the world, the male Golden Pheasant dazzles with its golden crest, fiery red body, emerald-green mantle, and long patterned tail. Males perform elaborate courtship displays by fanning their capes and circling females to showcase their brilliant plumage. We’ll also have another chance at Temminck’s Tragopan, Silver Pheasant, and more.
In the afternoon, we may continue bird photography or join a guided search for François’ langur. These endangered primates with jet-black fur and striking white sideburns inhabit dramatic limestone cliffs and forested valleys. We’ll return to Chongqing for our final night of a spectacular Sichuan opera face-changing performance and farewell dinner.
Day 13: Depart Chongqing
After breakfast, airport transfers will be provided.

Logistics
It's best to book a round-trip ticket from your home to a major hub like Beijing or Shanghai when we're 5-6 months out. From there, you'll book two one-way domestic tickets to/from CFU/TFU and CKG on a website like cTrip.
Arrive by noon on Day 1 at the airport for your group’s starting city: Chengdu for the Feb 21–Mar 5 departure, or Chongqing for the Mar 5–17 departure. Private airport pickup is included, and our local team will transfer you to our hotel. We’ll begin our cultural activities that afternoon and gather for a welcome dinner in the evening.
Day 13 is our departure day from the ending city: Chongqing for the Feb 21–Mar 5 departure, or Chengdu for the Mar 5–17 departure. Private airport transfers will be provided based on your flight schedule, and return flights may be scheduled anytime that day.
This workshop is designed to be all-inclusive from the moment you arrive in the starting city until your airport transfer on Day 13. All lodging, meals, non-alcoholic beverages, snacks, bottled water, ground transportation, entrance fees, permits, local access fees, China domestic travel insurance, and gratuities for our local team are included. Alcohol, international airfare, visa fees, international travel insurance, and personal expenses are not included.
This itinerary involves early mornings, mountain roads, changing elevations, and extended periods photographing from bird hides. The overall physical intensity is Moderate, although some days include long drives and cold mornings at higher elevations. Most photography locations are accessed by vehicle with only short walks required. Two locations will require walking stairs with up to 1 mile distance.
One of the unique aspects of this expedition is the opportunity to photograph wildlife across an extraordinary range of elevations and habitats. From lower valleys and subtropical forests to bamboo-covered mountain slopes, high-elevation conifer forests, and alpine habitats above 12,000 feet, we will photograph a remarkable diversity of species while experiencing some of Southwest China’s most dramatic landscapes.
Because wildlife behavior, weather, road conditions, and local access can change, the itinerary may be adjusted to maximize photographic opportunities. Our goal is always to place the group in the best possible position for wildlife encounters, photography, and cultural experiences.

Lodging
We include three nights in 5-star hotels in Chengdu and Chongqing, providing a comfortable start and finish to our journey in two of Southwest China’s most vibrant cities.
In the outlying cities and mountain regions, we’ll stay in the best available accommodations, generally equivalent to 3.5- to 4-star hotels. These properties are selected for their comfort, cleanliness, and convenient access to our wildlife photography locations.
We will also stay in traditional courtyard-style lodging in two villages, adding a more intimate cultural dimension to the expedition. These stays offer a wonderful sense of local architecture, atmosphere, and village life while keeping us close to key photography opportunities.
