The monsoon season in the Desert Southwest is magical—an ever-changing dance of light that transforms an already beautiful landscape into something otherworldly. For us at Action Photo Tours, this is one of the most exhilarating times to be out with our cameras. When storms roll in, the atmosphere itself becomes electric: dramatic skies, vibrant rainbows, fleeting reflection pools, and intense lightning bolts.
For photographers, it is paradise—where every storm brings possibility, every sunset holds surprise, and every moment is charged with creative potential.
That’s why we created our Monsoon Workshop Series: four unique photography adventures designed to place you right in the heart of this spectacular season. Each workshop offers a different perspective, from pure storm chasing to carefully chosen landscapes that come alive under the drama of the monsoon.

The Monsoon Workshop Series
Storms & Saguaros
If your goal is storm structure and lightning bolts, this is the workshop for you. We chase storms across southern Arizona, putting ourselves in the best position to capture bolts as they strike. Foregrounds are secondary—sometimes a road, a field, or a saguaro cactus—but the energy of the storm is always the star. This is the highest-likelihood trip for capturing those electrifying lightning images.
Moab Monsoon Mania
In Moab, the landscape takes center stage. Arches, canyons, reflecting pools, and dramatic vistas take on a whole new look under stormy skies. When storms roll through, we’re ready to capture them; when skies are clear, we shift to intricate rock lines, reflections, and night photography. It’s a perfect mix of landscapes and weather.
Grand Canyon Monsoon
Few places showcase the drama of the monsoon like the Grand Canyon. Storms sweep across the vast expanse, creating incredible light shows of rain shafts, lightning strikes, and rainbows. We balance storm chasing with classic canyon views, golden sunsets, and Milky Way nights from the North Rim. We’ll also take you out to very remote viewpoints you won’t find on your own!
White Pocket Monsoon
This workshop is all about the unique formations and textures in one of the Southwest’s most otherworldly locations. White Pocket’s swirling sandstone becomes even more surreal under monsoon skies, with the added bonus of reflection pools after storms. We camp overnight to take advantage of both sunsets and Milky Way skies, with storms adding extra drama when they arrive. On our open days, we’ll go wherever we see the best chances for spectacular conditions.

Which Workshop is Right for You?
If your dream is to capture lightning and the raw power of a desert storm, Storms & Saguaros is your best choice. We’ll drive as far as needed each day to stay ahead of the action and put you in the perfect spot when the sky ignites.
For the other monsoon workshops—Moab, Grand Canyon, and White Pocket—the weather is less predictable. We’ve timed each trip for the highest probability of active monsoon based on historic patterns, but nature has the final say. You might get five days of storms, or five days of clear skies.
The good news? These are among the most stunning landscapes in the Southwest, and you’ll make incredible images no matter what the weather brings. And if the storms don’t show, we’ll turn our attention to the legendary dark skies of the desert, where the Milky Way arcs overhead in dazzling detail.
