The itinerary is being kept flexible to account for weather and current conditions. Expert forecasting, group consensus and weather will dictate our final itineray.

  • Day 1 (May 11):  Meet at 1PM at the Best Western in Kanab for a mandatory introductory session.  We'll go over logistics and make plans for our upcoming days together. Mid-afternoon we hike out to one of the most photogenic and intriguing geologic areas of the Grand Staircase Escalante.
  • Day 2 (May 12):  We are up very early to go to the Great Chamber. With clear skies, we are hoping to capture the milky way just before dawn. We'll stay there through sunrise and return to town for a midday break. We reconvene in the afternoon with a post-processing session, showing you how to edit your milky way shots and then we head out for our sunset shoot at one of our favorite places just outside Zion NP.
  • Day 3 (May 13):  We are out early for sunrise at Zion at a scenic spot in Zion.  Midday, we explore an incredible sandstone slot canyon. After lunch, we start the long 4x4 drive out to White Pocket and stay out photographing past sunset.
  • Day 4 (May 14): We begin the day with our final post-processing session and image critique, working on shots you have taken during the workshop. After lunch we have a comprehensive post-processing session before we head out for our sunset shoot at a stunning location near the Grand Canyon.
  • Day 5 (May 15):  Let the full moon madness begin!  We are up early to capture the full moonset in Zion.  We return to Kanab and check out of our hotel. We load up and drive towards Page, AZ to photograph one of the best viewpoints of Lake Powell.  This is where we'll capture the lunar eclipse right at sunset!!
  • Day 6 (May 16): It won't be just any sunrise at Horseshoe Bend - we'll get the full moon at the same time!  After breakfast we start our tour into Secret Canyon. You'll love this canyon since it won't be crowded and you'll be able to take your time! After lunch we'll hike up into Waterholes Canyon and finish our day among the otherworldly formations at Stud Horse Point.
  • Day 7 (May 17):  We decide as a group where we'll go for sunrise this morning - there are so many options!  We'll then take our time photographing the beautiful Canyon-X.  The workshop will conclude no later than noon.

Please arrive in Kanab, UT on May 11th prior to 1PM Utah time for the orientation session.  Single occupancy hotel accommodations are included in the workshop. If you would like double occupancy, please contact us and we can give each person a $400 discount. We will be staying in Kanab, UT the nights of May 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th and in Page, AZ for the nights of May 15th and 16th. The workshop will conclude midday May 17th in Page, AZ.

You will need your own transportation to get to the gateway locations of Kanab, UT and Page, AZ. We will provide transportation for all workshop outings, but participants may need to drive their own vehicles when we relocate between Kanab and Page on May 15th.

All participants on this trip should be in reasonably good physical condition.  Although we aren't planning any long hikes on this trip, the uneven terrain, sand, and heat can make short hikes seem much harder.  You should be comfortable walking around 2-4 miles per day.

See the gear list further down for specific recommendations.  No matter what the weather does, we’ll get awesome photos. If it’s exceptionally wet, some of the dirt roads may be impassable. We'll modify the itinerary accordingly should that be the case. Transportation will be provided in 4WD trucks so we can handle most conditions.

If we can do the Zion Narrows, we will provide wading gear for you (shoes, neoprene socks, dry pants, and hiking stick).

For Secret Canyon, Canyon-X, and Waterholes Canyon, we have to pay for photographic access to the Navajo tribe that owns the access.  These costs are substantial but are included in the workshop pricing. We will be able to take tripods into these canyons for proper photography.
